That is a million dollar question! A question which could have ambivalent answers. A question which is often followed by a bizarre look of hesitation. A question which could unearth some of the darkest secrets which we are too intimidated to admit. You, I and everyone out there would love to say an ardent “Yes” to it, but I am afraid, this just cannot get any unreal.
Sadly, and rather unfortunately, the society we reside in has always been that one predominant control which will keep ruining our lives perpetually. I concur with the vagueness of the statement. Let me elaborate.
It would be unfair to limit the existence of poignant yet very influential beauty standards to our society. This is, by all means, global which makes it even worse. If you ask me whether I have ever felt comfortable in my own skin, I’ll shake my head. With all honesty, I think, I am oppressed. And probably, so are you.
All of us have lost the power to define ourselves. It feels as if I lag behind in the race of attaining perfection; the perfection which is construed by some invisible and insignificant forces. What disturbs me is that even after trying hard to negate the presence of these forces, I am chained up by them after all.
Advocating the ever-growing influence of capitalism, the media advertisements elucidate the concept of e.g. fairness (which apparently is the synonym for beauty). When an average girl like myself does not lie near the appropriate end of the spectrum, she could get traumatized. So yes! She is not comfortable in her own skin because she is, for some odd or maybe realistic reason, so far from what society has prescribed for her.
Whatever gets the highest Paparazzi attention is undeniably the new trendsetter and consequently, becomes an incremental aspect in the ‘prescribed standards of the society’ list. So while that average girl starts chasing what seemingly looks attractive, she does not feel comfortable till she reaches the point of attaining the unattainable (which is apparently impossible).
Ask yourself. Are you audacious enough to appreciate the real you? Will you ever take a step forward to break the stereotypes? If yes, then congratulations! You are officially on your way to conquering the world. That, for me at least, is the real struggle as well as the real success
